Details of Greek leg of 2012 London Olympics Torch Relay have been announced by the Hellenic Olympic Committee, HOC which includes confirmation of first torch bearer.
During the 3000 km Relay, the Olympic flame will pass through 34 cities which will be carried by 500 people from 10th to 17th May.
HOC made announcement that British born 10 km swimming world champion of Greece Spyros Gianniotis will be honored as the first Torch bearer.
For a medal at 2012 London Olympics, he is expected as the major contender. Giannotis further made announcement that ‘swimming in London will be like swimming at home’.
At the Temple of Hera in Ancient Olympia ceremony will be held on 10th May. With rays of sun, the flame will be lit. The journey will begin all over Greece with travelling to island of Crete before heading towards Piraeus, Thessalonica, Xanthi and Larissa.
In Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, the flame arrived. This is the site of first modern Olympic Games in the year 1896 on 17th May. The flame will be given to the London 2012 delegation.
On 18th May, the Olympic flame made its arrival in UK. On 27th July, the flame will travel on 70 day journey across the country and head towards the opening ceremony.
