2012 London Olympics Flame to Come in Taunton
Symbol of world’s biggest sporting event, the Olympic Flame has placed Taunton in international spotlight. The Somerset County Gazette along with the bosses of London 2012 Games has appealed unsung heroes to carry torch during the remarkable event to be held on 21st May.
On 18th May, flame will arrive from Greece and will cover 8,000 miles to reach Olympic Stadium on 27th July. The relay will commence at Land’s End, Cornwall.
Chairman of Olympic Torch Steering Group in Taunton Deane, Cllr Mark Edwards stated, “We’re delighted and honoured Taunton is going to share in what is one of the most iconic features of the world’s greatest sporting event. The torch coming to the county town will ignite the enthusiasm in the whole area for the 2012 Olympics and we look forward to this event becoming a centrepiece of the Games in Taunton Deane. This will spread the Olympic spirit across Somerset – the prestige of hosting the torch will really put Taunton on the map.”

Seb Coe, London 2012 Chair and Boris Johnson, Mayor of London have made announcements regarding the London Olympics tickets to school children.
Ticket share scheme offers 1, 25, 000 tickets to all the school children of London. It means one child out of eight will receive the ticket for the remarkable event of Olympics or Paralympic Games.
Approximately 50, 000 tickets will be distributed in the schools all across UK. On the other hand, British Olympic Association, British Paralympic Association, Sport England and Tickets for Troops have been given 25, 000 tickets. For all the schools and colleges in UK, Ticketshare is a part of London 2012 Get Set Network, official London 2012 Education programme.
Donation of tickets have been done through the levy made on 2012 London Hospitality packages. Prestige Hospitality has sold the tickets. Seb Coe, LOCOG Chair said, “Schools and colleges across London and the UK have a golden opportunity to give some of their pupils the chance of a lifetime – tickets to see the greatest show on earth. More than 18,000 schools have taken the first step towards claiming their tickets by registering with Get Set.”
He further added, “Now is the time for them to go one step further and apply to join the Get Set network and claim their Ticketshare tickets. I am hugely grateful both to Prestige Ticketing and to the Mayor of London who is fully supportive of the scheme to ensure tickets for London schoolchildren.”
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London stated, “I can think of none more deserving to have a ringside seat at the world’s greatest sporting event than the next generation of Londoners. So there’s not a moment to waste to ensure your school gets its tickets and embraces the spirit and excitement of the London Games during the build up to 2012.”

Major aim of Greenwich test event is to test whether the venues can manage the games successfully. At the Royal Artillery Barracks, construction work has already started on tent like fixtures. It will host indoor pistol and rifle events. Olympic test events will commence in the month of July. Other major preparations undergoing are test equestrian dressage, modern pentathlon events and varied areas of park.
The timetable of Greenwich Park Olympic are as follows:
• May 16 – Test event set up begins
• July 1 – Athletes and horses arrive for test event
• July 4 to July 10 – Test events take place
• April 2012 – Work begins on installation of temporary facilities for Olympics
• July 6, 2012 – Most of the park closes to the public
• July 27 to August 12, 2012 – Olympic games
• August 30 to September 4, 2012 – Paralympic equestrian events
• September to October 2012 – All structures in the park removed
• November 2012 – Restoration work begins to return park to its original condition
Graham Day, manager of Greenwich Park said, “It is all very exciting now that work is beginning. The numbers involved in the tests are not very big. We have 10 times that many visitors for the marathon and have worked very closely with LOCOG and the ODA during planning. We don’t think restoration is going to be a problem as the weather is good and there is going to be minimal excavation. Most of the structures will be built on top of the land rather than digging down into it.”

2012 London Olympics festival, Big Dance 2012 will be held from 7th to 15th July 2012. Wayne McGregor has announced some interesting plans for the largest dancing festival of the world.
In the Trafalgar Square, Royal Ballet Choreographer and Artistic Director will be the leader of mass participation.
McGregor is known for maypole dancing, Latin, ballroom and amateur dramatics and finally choreographer. He wants to encourage people “who don’t often dance but maybe danced in the past or want to give it a go”.
He further added, “What we’re interested in is activating hundreds of choreographers to make their own piece. What’s important is that everyone has the chance to make their own choreography. There will be about 50 groups from London, from all different styles, all different ages. I’ll start to borrow and repurpose material to make a larger piece.”
For the London 2012 Festival, Big Dance will be a major part. Director of Cultural Olympiad, Ruth Mackenzie said, “Big Dance is one of my best, most-loved projects in the Cultural Olympiad. It encourages people not just to watch but to do, whether you just go to the cinema and watch Pina Bausch, or whether you want to be the next Pina Bausch.”

LOCOG or London 2012 Organising Committee made announcement regarding the plans of testing its system, equipment, workforce and procedures to run Olympic and Paralympic Sailing competitions. LOCOG will run London 2012 sailing test event called Weymouth and Portland International Regetta 2011 from Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
LOCOG has planned 42 test events and Weymouth and Portland International Regetta 2011 is just one of them. In the Weymouth and Portland International Regetta 2011, approximately 380 sailors from all over 60 nations will participate.
LOCOG CEO, Paul Deighton stated, “LOCOG’s testing programme is all about 'road testing' all our operational plans on the water to make sure we have all the knowledge we need to deliver a truly memorable Games in 2012 and learn any lessons in advance. The Weymouth and Portland International Regatta 2011 provides a great opportunity for athletes who may well be selected for the Games to come and sail on the same waters at the same time of year to learn as much as they can about the conditions Weymouth Bay might offer them in 2012.”
He further added, “Weymouth and Portland is a fantastic sailing venue and we’re looking forward to welcoming the teams here and delivering a world class regatta this summer.”

LOCOG CEO, Paul Deighton stated, “LOCOG’s testing programme is all about 'road testing' all our operational plans on the water to make sure we have all the knowledge we need to deliver a truly memorable Games in 2012 and learn any lessons in advance. The Weymouth and Portland International Regatta 2011 provides a great opportunity for athletes who may well be selected for the Games to come and sail on the same waters at the same time of year to learn as much as they can about the conditions Weymouth Bay might offer them in 2012.”
He further added, “Weymouth and Portland is a fantastic sailing venue and we’re looking forward to welcoming the teams here and delivering a world class regatta this summer.”
For Weymouth and Portland International Regatta 2011, there will be no sale of tickets. 2012 London Olympics venues Latest News
2012 London Olympics venue, Olympic Park will be the host of first competitive sports, such as Basketball and BMX. Basket Ball will be held from 16th to 21st August and BMX will be held on 19th and 20th August. On 31st July, Mountain Biking will be held at Hadleigh Farm in Essex, whereas beach Volley ball will be held from 9th to 14th August at Horse Guards Parade in Central London.
On May 2011 and May 2012, testing will be taking place at London Olympics Venues. In the sporting calendar, there will be 17 international events accompanied with 25 London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) invitational events.
Only Men’s event in 2012 London Olympics is Basketball which will be participated by Great Britain, France, China, Australia, Croatia and Serbia. On the other hand, women’s team from Great Britain and China will play in the beach volleyball test event.
Lots of riders will participate in Mountain biking and BMX, as they are open events. Major areas to test includes play, technology and people, which comprises of athletes, spectators, staff and volunteers. Approximately 150, 000 2012 London Olympics tickets will be available for the spectators.

Although our venues won't be dressed in their Games finery, a number of events will give the public a chance to see some world-class sporting action ahead of next year. These events are our opportunity to try out our new venues, test new technology and equipment and walk our extended teams through their roles and responsibilities.”
He further added, “We have learned a lot from previous Games which we will put to good use as we challenge ourselves over the next 12 months.”

Big Dance Festival of 2012 London Olympics
World’s largest dance programme, Big Dance has made announcements plans of reaching out to communities all across the England. This will be the part of London 2012 Festival. Diversity of dance styles will be celebrated by Big Dance 2012.
The grand festival will be held from 7th to 15th July 2012 and programme will include whole array of events which comprises of dance item of 2000 dancers in Trafalgar Square.
Director of Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival, Ruth Mackenzie stated, “The success of Big Dance as a Cultural Olympiad project in reaching millions of people in London is a testament to the organisers and funders. The ambition to reach out to communities across the UK in 2012 matches our vision for a UK-wide celebration. I’m delighted that Big Dance will be a highlight of this summer of celebration in the London 2012 Festival.”
On 21st June 2012, London 2012 Festival will commence and will bring major actors from across the globe in UK which will celebrate 2012 London Olympics!

Ian Thorpe to Mark Return -2012 London Olympics Latest Update
Five time Olympic Champion has recently made announcements regarding his return to swimming for the upcoming 2012 London Olympics. From the past two months, he is working hard with Touretski in Switzerland.
During the last week held Royal Wedding, 28 year old Thorpe was a guest. He lost lots of weight and was looking very slim. In accordance with FINA rules, Thorpe cannot compete until November. Touretski stated, “I think in November he will come back to racing activity," Touretski said. "I believe we will start with the World Cup race in Singapore [Nov 4].”
61 year old Touretski has coached swimmers with accrediting 40 world records throughout his career. He also said, “He is in a good stage because his approach is positive. He is also very creative. I never communicated with him very close [in the past] but I realise how bright he is.”
Russian also stated that Thorpe would be ideal for 100m or 200m freestyle. Touretski said, “He must do different things with his technical preparation and this of course depends on his physical ability. But at his age ... he is stronger now than before and that is encouraging for the future. When it comes to his fitness levels, we followed a very simple structure. Of course, he has lost weight, but Ian is now the same he was at the (Sydney) Olympics in 2000. To me, he looks brilliant, but I don't want the emphasis on him losing weight but more on what he is going to do after.”
