GB Swimmer Anne Payne Qualifies for 2012 London Olympics

Swimmer Keri-Payne has regained her world 10m open water title in Shanghai and become first British athlete to make her position in games. She is working hard for the Hyde Park’s Serpentine for the upcoming 2012 London Olympics.

She has been the winner of 2008 Beijing Silver medal and considered as the biggest hope of Britain for London Olympics. During the race, three competitors had to be rescued, whereas Johannesburg-born Stockport swimmer has ended the course at Jinshan City Beach within 2hr 1min 58.1 sec.

Payne stated, “To be on that Olympic team at a home Olympics is going to be absolutely amazing," Payne said. "It's a weight off my shoulders. I can concentrate on training now for next year and I don't have to worry about qualifying because I've already done it. I have events to swim in the pool schedule next week [the 1500m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay] and then I'll return home and get straight back into the water and concentrate on my preparation for 2012. I'm sure there will be added pressure on me going into the Olympics but I'll just work on that coming into it. I'm definitely going to have a target on my back but we'll see how it goes.”

As both the shooting and archery have qualified places for the games, the 23 year old is required to finish in the top 10 to get qualified. To secure her position in British team, she has been the first named athlete.

Besides open-water swimming, other sports to secure places are boxing and tennis. By late September, boxers for the Olympic games will be confirmed. Team GB chef de mission and British Olympic Association chief executive, Andy Hunt said, “That's one down, around 549 to go – well done Keri-Anne Payne for getting the ball rolling. Keri-Anne's outstanding performance to win gold is a terrific personal accomplishment and the Olympic qualification represents a significant milestone on the road to 2012 for Team GB.”

He further added, “The Games really do feel very real: the first athlete qualifying a week out from one year to go, it feels very real. It's brilliant for all the swimmers, all the athletes across the team. It is very appropriate that the first athlete to qualify a named place comes in an event which brought us so much success at the last Olympics, where Team GB's swimmers brought home half of the six medals on offer in the open‑water discipline.”

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, both Payne and David Davies have been the winner of silver medal, whereas Cassie Patten won bronze in 10 km event.

Track and Field Team of GB to Skip London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony

The track and field team of Great Britain will not be the part of 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony. On 3rd August, athletics event will commence, whereas London Games will begin on 27th July.

Charles Van Commenee, head coach of UK Athletics stated, “It doesn't fit in the professional preparation for the biggest event of your life. In the end we are all aware that performance is number one. They can do the closing ceremonies.”
The Dutchman also believes that athletes waiting outside the opening ceremony for long time may lead to wastage of time, as some of them must be attending training camps during the curtain raiser.

He said, “They would not go shopping for eight hours before their biggest event so why would you be on your feet for that long? There will be a few at that time coming back from altitude and who will be based in Loughborough but you will not see track and field athletes on the 27th July in London.”

Chris Tomlinson, British long jump record holder said that he is not keen to be the part of opening ceremony and prefer to prepare for the competition. During 2004 Athens Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics, he did not participated in opening ceremonies, as he quoted, “You've got to queue from the Olympic village many hours beforehand, and queue to wait to get on the buses. From start to finish it's at least a six to seven-hour event.”

Van Commenee further added, “Some are tempted because of the emotional, once-in-a-lifetime experience. There has been a little noise, but they know it's not feasible.”

Greenwich Arena Not Apt for 2012 London Olympics

Upcoming 2012 London Olympics is one of the biggest sporting events across the globe. The 2012 Olympics host, picturesque Greenwich Park arena has been considered dead. After three day test event, this area has not at all been considered ideal for the British riders.

British Nations Cup riders Nick Skelton, David McPherson and Will Funnell were quite critical about the waxed sand as well as fibre based service during this low key event. Skelton said, “The ground, for me, is a little bit dead and dense at the moment.”

McPherson said, “For me, the surface is nowhere near good enough. It needs an enormous amount of work. I think it is a consensus between the riders that there is a sort of a pudding feeling, and this cannot be, because it's our Olympics and everything needs to be perfect.”

Funnell further said, “It was a bit too soft, but to be fair they've only had four days to get it right. I think they've got five or six weeks for next year when the surface will be down. When you are jumping at the top of a horse's ability at an Olympics, the surface is going to make a big difference.”

The footing adviser of the sport’s world governing body, Federation Equestre International, Leopoldo Palacios admitted regarding the presence of issues, as he said, “For this event the footing was not perfect – it had problems. It is not packed enough, it's soft, very heavy for jumping. We know that, we are aware of that, and the riders passed feedback to us.”

One of the Gameorganisre’s spokeswomen said, “That is the whole point of testing. We will collate all those comments, both positive and negative. We will refine our plans and make sure the platform is in top condition for next year. It's part of the important learning process and shows why it is so crucial to test well in advance.”

While going to the final day of showjumping, Piggy French of Britain stated, “It’s spectacular, but will be very intense. The terrain is testing both physically and mentally.”

Former European champion, Pippa Funnell was relaxed that her Olympics opponent has redesigned for a big horse. She also said, “It was quite nerve-racking. If it was Primmore’s Pride [her Athens 2004 ride] I would be dreading it, because he is so strong.”

In order to maximize backdrop of Canary Wharf, two feature jumps have been positioned on hill brows. Fox Pitt, “You need a proper equine athlete. You need a horse that changes gear effortlessly and that will turn when you ask.”

Veteran of Six Olympics, New Zealand’s Andrew Nicolson stated, “It’s not my ideal terrain for a championship but I think it’s going to produce a very exciting competition. Riders will be on the edge.”

Sue Benson has been appointed as the course designer have generated lots of feelings. But, competitors are expressing lots of appreciation for her work.
Benson stated, “Having been a rider, I hear what they are saying. The terrain keeps coming at you. It’s in your face. It’s what I’ve had to deal with.”

GB High Expectations for 2012 London Olympics

In Poland, GB has reached the second group stage and surpassed all the expectations. Out of six games, it has won just one game and has defeated experienced teams, such as Lithuania and Russia. Maher stated, “I have a lot more confidence for 2012. We can get better as a team if we develop our talent.”While addressing BBC Sport, the Australian coach said, “Everyone at GB Basketball is delighted with the campaign. To be able to compete with the teams we did was phenomenal. Our results were the height of our dreams.”

In the second round, GB has a thrilling encounter with Lithuania. During the final minutes, the team was leading with an instant victory after giving away defensive foul. Maher also said, “We should have beaten Lithuania. We could have beaten Russia - our lack of experience was shown up by their athletic ability. But we were able to compete.”

He further added, “To go to that type of competition and be able to compete with countries that have a strong tradition of basketball was great. This was a tournament of world-class teams and players - players that play regularly in the world's top teams.”

Since 1956, EuroBasket championship has been played, whereas basketball team of women has performed for the first time.

Maher said, “A lot of people expected us to be ambushed and get smashed by every team so our results were very pleasing. It would have been easy for the players to walk out on court and crumble against bigger team like Belarus and the Czech Republic. But they didn't. The players' attitude was really good. Our mentality shows we can become a force in basketball.”

In this tournament, some of the action packed performances will be given against most powerful European teams. Maher stated, “We were perceived as a real basketball-playing nation by the end of the tournament. The other teams were complimentary to us and I think we're seen as a legitimate team now.”

The most significant player of the Britain is Johannah Leedham. But, she would play limited role in the campaigning of team, as she was recovering from knee tendinitis.

With 12 points per game, the Chester born player is one of the leading scorers of GB.
