2012 London Olympics New Sculpture

In the north of Olympic Park, a brand new permanent piece of public art will be installed. Internationally renowned artist Monica Bonvicini will design three nine metre tall letters, RUN. On the plaza of Handball Arena in Olympic Park, this gigantic structure will be constructed. This huge structure will be comprised of glass and stainless steel and generate a mirrored affect. It will change in accordance with the light and time of day.

During daytime, letters will look like mirrors for the visitors and surroundings. At night, letters will be more transparent with glowing internal LED lighting. Head of Art and Cultural Strategy at Olympic Delivery Authority, Sarah Weir said, “We wanted to commission a new and innovative piece of public art that would animate the plaza and be fitting for both the Games and the legacy of the Park.”

Sarah further said, “A number of renowned artists were shortlisted for this commission but Monica’s proposal was chosen by an independent and expert panel because it fulfilled all the ambitions for this key location within the Olympic Park. The sculpture is unique and ambitious but will be relevant and fitting – we hope it will help illuminate this part of the Olympic Park for many years to come.”

2012 London Olympics Sustainability Report

Complete sustainability report of London 2012 has been recently issued. It comprises of detailed London 2012 programme for the year 2010. It also displays the sustainability considerations in varied areas. In the year 2007, plan has been published for the first time. Some of the major themes are discussed in the original plan, A Blueprint for Change.

The report states that Olympic Park will come to end on budget and on time. Olympic Delivery Authority, ODA has been created and designed all the venues and new infrastructure. It means that park is heading towards sustainable construction.
London 2012 is ready to deliver Low-carbon games, whereas LOCOG has effectively avoided 100, 000 tonnes of carbon emissions. LOCOG has worked closely with sponsors, licensees and supplier and placed everything on time.

CEO of LOCOG, Paul Deighton said, “I’m proud that sustainability is an important part of how we do business. The work that has been done on integrating sustainability into food, logistics, transport, ceremonies, technology and event management has uncovered opportunities that have not been realised before in an Olympic or Paralympic context. There is still much to be done, but we are well on track to achieve some fantastic results.”

ODA Chairman, John Armitt stated, “From the outset of the project, the Olympic Park has set new standards in sustainability, including the delivery of lightweight venues, the recycling or reuse of waste materials, using concrete with a high recycled content, and delivering materials by rail or water. We have achieved new standards for a project of this size and scale and have raised the bar for the industry.”
