2012 London Olympics Flame to Come in Taunton

Symbol of world’s biggest sporting event, the Olympic Flame has placed Taunton in international spotlight. The Somerset County Gazette along with the bosses of London 2012 Games has appealed unsung heroes to carry torch during the remarkable event to be held on 21st May.

On 18th May, flame will arrive from Greece and will cover 8,000 miles to reach Olympic Stadium on 27th July. The relay will commence at Land’s End, Cornwall.

Chairman of Olympic Torch Steering Group in Taunton Deane, Cllr Mark Edwards stated, “We’re delighted and honoured Taunton is going to share in what is one of the most iconic features of the world’s greatest sporting event. The torch coming to the county town will ignite the enthusiasm in the whole area for the 2012 Olympics and we look forward to this event becoming a centrepiece of the Games in Taunton Deane. This will spread the Olympic spirit across Somerset – the prestige of hosting the torch will really put Taunton on the map.”

Chairman of London 2012 Organising Committee of Olympics and Paralympic Games, Lord Coe said, “We’re thrilled Taunton Deane has agreed to host the Olympic Flame on its journey right across the UK. It will shine a light right across Taunton, celebrating the culture and heritage of the area and showcasing the very best of Taunton and Somerset.”
