At the site of ancient Olympics, an actress who performed the role of high priestess ignite the torch with the aid of parabolic mirror on a warm and sunny day. No back up flame was required under the bright sunny skies, which was used during the Olympic torch lightening day final rehearsal.
With the conclusion of choreographed ceremony, priestess transferred torch to first torch bearer, Greek swimmer and Olympic silver medallist Spyros Gianniotis.
In the huge line of 490 torchbearers, Gianniotis is the first one to carry the flame all over 2900 kms on Greek soil. On 17 May, the flame will be given to the London Games organizers in Athens Panathenian Stadium. The Modern Games had been staged for the first time in the year 1896.
Jacques Rogge, International Olympic Committee president stated, “With this ceremony we begin the final countdown to a dream that came to life seven years ago in Singapore, when London was selected to host the 2012 Games.”
This will be the last traditional lighting ceremony of the Rogge, as next year he will step down from his post of President. While addressing Olympic, London and Greek officials inside the stadium, the Beligian surgeon stated, “The energy that passes from the sun to the Olympic flame will light a torch that will travel from this birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games to the country that invented modern sport and the spirit of fair play, heralding the opening of the 2012 London Games on July 27.”
London is the only city to receive Olympic flame twice. For the first time, it received in the year 1948 Olympic Games. The 1908 Olympic Games were hosted by the capital of Britain. During the 1936 Berlin Olympics, torch lighting ceremony and relay have been introduced.
While addressing Reuters, Sebastian Coe, Chief of London Games stated just before the beginning of lighting the Olympic ceremony, “I feel incredibly excited and I think it's a very, very big moment.” As an 18 year old tourist, Coe marked a visit to Olympia in the year 1975. He has been the 1500 Olympic Gold medallist for twice. He said, “For me, it really links what I did at the Los Angeles and Moscow [Games] with the ancient Games. I think for me this is probably the moment that what I did in '80 and '84 properly comes into context.”
