On the evening of 18th May, 2012 Olympic flame will land at naval base on gold liveried British Airbus 319 featuring the code sign BA2012 amidst ceremonial lantern.
At the base, flame will be greeted by 1000 guests, which is home to substantial fleet of Navy’s Merlin as well as Sea King helicopter squadrons.
On May 10, flame will be lighten up from sun’s rays in a complete hour long ceremony to be held at Temple of Hera in Olympia. After the ceremony, a short traditional relay across the Greece will be held.
In the Greek component of the relay, LOCOG stated two inspirational people from UK will be involved. On May 17, flame will be transferred to the London organizers in Panathenaic Stadium positioned in Athens.
RNAS Culdrose Commanding Officer, Captain Willie Entwisle said, “Our personnel, many of whom are currently supporting the Royal Navy on operations across the globe, are very excited that the build-up to the London 2012 Olympic Games will start here.”
Sebastian Coe, Chairman of LOCOG stated his team wants to work with the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Ministry of Defence.
