2012 London Olympics New Sculpture

In the north of Olympic Park, a brand new permanent piece of public art will be installed. Internationally renowned artist Monica Bonvicini will design three nine metre tall letters, RUN. On the plaza of Handball Arena in Olympic Park, this gigantic structure will be constructed. This huge structure will be comprised of glass and stainless steel and generate a mirrored affect. It will change in accordance with the light and time of day.

During daytime, letters will look like mirrors for the visitors and surroundings. At night, letters will be more transparent with glowing internal LED lighting. Head of Art and Cultural Strategy at Olympic Delivery Authority, Sarah Weir said, “We wanted to commission a new and innovative piece of public art that would animate the plaza and be fitting for both the Games and the legacy of the Park.”

Sarah further said, “A number of renowned artists were shortlisted for this commission but Monica’s proposal was chosen by an independent and expert panel because it fulfilled all the ambitions for this key location within the Olympic Park. The sculpture is unique and ambitious but will be relevant and fitting – we hope it will help illuminate this part of the Olympic Park for many years to come.”
