At the European championships, the Taekwondo team of Great Britain has secured their finest medal haul with seven in all. On the final day, Martin Stamper and Caroline Fisher won bronze medals. In the earlier phases, Aaron Cook, Michael Harvey and Lutalo Muhammad won gold medal which resulted in attaining top of the male medal standings. It is the second best nation in Manchester.
While addressing BBC Sport, boss Gary Hall said, “I'm delighted, it's been a fantastic week. They performed out of their skins.”
The performance director of Great Britain added, “To set a new British record is a brilliant performance by the athletes and all of the staff. We set out to beat the Turks as they hadn't lost in 20 years and so to get the number one slot for the men was phenomenal.”
Now, Hall needs to choose four athletes for the London 2012 Olympics. Cook will take the position of 80kg. After stunning 2011, Stamper was in pole position which culminated in a World Championship bronze medal.
Stamper said, “I knew I had the capabilities to win it, so I'm disappointed. I'm confident [about selection], as all of my medals have been in the -68kg's [Olympic class]. Take nothing away from Mike [Harvey] he's done amazingly well, but it's in the division below. I would have loved to get into the final because then I would have been going, but now it's up to the selectors.”
After collecting two bronze medals, Hall admitted women’s team still need to go. The magic of glorious event of 2012 London Olympics can be enjoyed at fullest with online advance
