For the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, Britain will offer 13,500 troops. Interestingly, this number is more than troops appointed in Afghanistan. According to the organizers, International uncertainly means security needed for this scintillating event.
Philip Hammond, Defence Secretary stated that military be supportive for police as well as private staff. This will be the largest peacetime security operation of Britain to secure perimeters of Olympics and Paralympic venues.
Military presence will comprise of special forces as well as specialist bomb disposal units. Missiles will protect the Olympic Park in Stratford, East London against airborne attack.
Hammond said, “Next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games are once-in-a-generation events for the UK. We want them to be secure, so that all those competing and attending can enjoy the games for the celebration of sporting achievement and cultural celebration that it is.”
