On the wanted list for Team GB, Stuart Pearce accepted names of David Beckham, Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale. In the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, Pearce will be the incharge of team and looking for some players to ‘sign up’ to the team.
The Under 21 coach of England revealed feedback from players has been quite positive. He said, “I've got a feeling that the players themselves are desperate to be part of this Team GB situation.
"I have spoken with a few players and the overriding thing that I am hearing back is that this is a fantastic showcase of our national sport in the Olympic games. If I was still playing and had the chance to represent Team GB in a tournament on home soil then I would jump at the chance, to be quite honest with you. It's a fantastic thing to be involved in and I think the players are generally very excited to be involved in this.”
He further said, “There are very few of us who have been involved in a tournament on home soil. I was fortunate enough back in Euro 96 to see the exposure and the explosion of football in this country for that tournament.”
Ramsey and Bale met some serious criticism, as they were the Great Britain 2012 Olympics supporters’ shirt. But, Pearce is still optimistic about their sign up to the team.
Pearce stated, “I've not spoken to them individually, I've heard their words and seen the pictures of them wearing shirts and that's a great indication to me that these players might want to be part of that.” He is worried which player will be committed to the competition.
According to the rules and regulations of Olympics, maximum of three players over the age of 23 can be selected by countries. Interestingly, Beckham has expressed his interest in the participation of Olympics.
