According to the former Olympic Champion, Michael Johnson, Usain Bolt could not win gold in 4X400m relay. He is defending his sprint title in London.
The 25 year old Jamaican will be the defender of 100m, 200m and 4X100m titles in the year 2012. Johnson said that Bolt has the capability to break 400m world record. While addressing BBC Radio 5 live, Johnson said, “You can't train for the 400 [as well], it would be an absolute distraction and the training wouldn't work.”
Bolt futher clear his intentions of running in 4X400m relay along with shorter sprints and 4X100m relay to follow Carl Lewis’s feat of four golds at just one Olympics.
After being announced by the World Governing Body the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) as the Athlete of the Year, Bolt praised his Jamaican team-mates. He said that his Jamaican team-mates have shown huge improvement in 4X400m. He further added that he is looking for significant development to his country in winning the Olympic title for the first time after 1952 Helsinki Games.
The three time Olympic Champion said, “If I can help to get them a gold medal, I will want to go on that team.”
During the Atlanta Olympics, Johnson has been the winner of gold in 200m and 400m in the year 1996. Johnson said, “I think he could be the world-record holder at 400 metres but he's said that he has no interest in training for it, which I can understand - it's a difficult race to train for.”
He further added, “I see no reason why he shouldn't be able to repeat as an Olympic gold medallist in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m, but the 4x400m is going to be tough. Without him the Jamaican team certainly doesn't have enough 400m runners to beat the United States - they could beat the US possibly with him on the team if he was training for the 400m, but he can't just step onto the track and run a 44 or a 43-second split just off 100 and 200m training.”
Johnson continued, “I don't see that happening. I don't see the Jamaican coaching staff putting him on the 4x400m relay unproven. That means he's got to go out there and run some 400s during the season, in order to prove that he should be on that relay. In order to go out and run some 400s, and run them fast enough, that means he's got to train for it, which is something he said he's never going to do.”
