Deborah Meaden from Dragon’s Den and Grand Designs Kevin McCloud have been the part of London 2012 Sustainability Ambassadors. They made a visit to the Olympic Park, as LOCOG has been recognized for the ground breaking approach towards sustainability.
LOCOG is the first Games Organising Committee which has been certified with British Standard 8901: Specification for a Sustainability Management Systems for Events. Independent Certification Body SGS United Kingdom carried out a series assessments and audited all the activities which have been delivered by LOCOG.
Paul Deighton, LOCOG Chief Executive stated, “Certification to BS 8901 is an Olympic and Paralympic first and is a fantastic achievement that shows how far sustainability is embedded into the heart of our organization.”
He further added, “We still have more work to do but we are well on track to achieve some fantastic results and uncover more opportunities that have not been realised before in an Olympic or Paralympic context.”
London 2012 bid inspired the BS 8901 and developed mainly for the events industry to aid event organizers, venues and suppliers to function in sustainable manner.
